Micronesian Air Connection Services, a new CNMI inter-island carrier that also plans to provide service to Guam, was recently issued a qualifying certificate — or tax breaks — and now plans to commence its initial scheduled service within the next 30 to 60 days.
It plans to invest some $8.2 million, including inter-island air passenger service.
The carrier said it plans to submit a bid in hopes of securing a lease for the necessary hangar space on Guam.
MACS said it will be using Cessna 208 Grand Caravan aircraft equipped with air-conditioning and premium seats for its Rota-Guam route.
Last week, CNMI Gov. Arnold I. Palacios approved and issued a qualifying certificate for J&P Holdings, MACS’ parent company.
The qualifying certificate issued by the Commonwealth Economic Development Authority calls for 100% tax abatement for 22 years.
Under CEDA’s notice of issuance, MACS will invest approximately $8.2 million, including inter-island air passenger service, and has 60 days after Jan. 7, when Palacios signed it, to accept or reject the qualifying certificate.
CEDA’s QC program was established on Dec. 1, 2000. Under the program, tax benefits are given to entice businesses to put up new investments in the CNMI or to assist existing investors in expanding their operations.
J&P Holdings co-owner John Stewart said the approval of MACS’ QC program application marks an important milestone for air transportation in the CNMI.
“As 30-year residents of these islands, our family and team understand the vital importance of reliable air service to our community’s prosperity,” said Stewart.
He said MACS, operating under Szabo Aerospace, plans to commence its initial scheduled service within the next 30 to 60 days.
“(This will add) new transportation options for our island residents. Increased competition and choice in air transportation will create positive opportunities throughout our community,” Stewart said. “We look forward to working alongside other tourism stakeholders, as well as the CNMI government, as the CNMI rebuilds its tourism sector.”
He said additional flight options will support hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and local businesses as they work to reestablish the CNMI’s pre-COVID position in the Pacific tourism market.
Stewart added that while MACS prepares for its scheduled service launch, its charter services are available to serve immediate travel needs.
Community members can email Info@FlyMACS.com to arrange charter flights or to join MACS’ notification list for updates on its upcoming scheduled services.
